Staycation at Andaz Singapore

Situated at the crossroads of the Kampong Glam, Little India and Bras Basah Bugis cultural districts — with their
intimate shophouse-filled alleyways and atmospheric colours, textures and flavours — Andaz Singapore captures the essence of a traditional alleyway ambience and recreates the spirit of the surrounding neighbourhoods up in the sky. This boutique inspired luxury hotel, located on the 25th to 39th floors of DUO tower, offers 342 guestrooms and suites.

At check-in, there was a cute little pushcart serving drinks, such as coffee, tea or lemonade. It is free for hotel guests, between 9am to 6pm. Checkin was a breeze as there was only 1 or 2 groups ahead of us, so it did not take a long time. Since our package was different, check-in was at 6pm, we arrived half an hour earlier and the room was ready for us. The details of our promotional package booked on Klook are: 1-Night Stay at King Bed or Twin Beds with SGD100 F&B Dining Credit, 6PM Check-In & 3PM Check-Out. All this for $250 and I managed to snag it for 3-4 Nov, which is the eve of Deepavali public holiday, so it was a really good deal.

Andaz never fails to disappoint with the sleek interior and the high floors offering nice views of the downtown Bugis area. There is also a comfortable couch in the room with a wooden study desk to do some work. The guestrooms are inspired by the locale, and features organic, fluid spaces with warm russet and mustard tones.

The king-sized bed was very comfortable to lie on. The pillows provided were sufficient, but if you prefer other types of pillows, you can follow the instructions on the TV to request for other types.

This 38 sq m guestroom has a king-size bed, a day bed, en suite bathroom with shower (no bathtub), and floor-to-ceiling windows framing stunning views of our vibrant neighbourhood. Maximum capacity: 2 adults and 1 child (below the age of 12)

The bathroom was spacious, with two separate doors, one for the toilet and one for the shower, so two people can use at the same time. While most other hotels have a bathtub, unfortunately Andaz does not have it for the deluxe rooms, except for the suites.

A new addition to the amenity at Andaz is these pairs of slippers. These are traditional Singapore style slippers, but branded with the words “stolen from Andaz”. This makes a good souvenir to bring home.

The next morning, we were greeted with sun rays streaming into our room. There are blinds in the room to block out the sunlight if you prefer to snooze. Our room was facing Bugis and further ahead, we could see Swissotel and South Beach Quarters.

We booked one of the earlier slots for breakfast at the cafe, at 7.30am. For drinks, we had Earl grey tea for her and cappuccino for me. I also ordered the Antioxidant Smoothie which seemed special on the menu. This power-packed, healthy smoothie consists of banana, rolled oats, mango and soy milk. It is suitable for the lactose intolerant.

We were allowed to select one breakfast main each, as well as unlimited selections of the continental menu items. She had the Eggs any style, in this case scrambled eggs was chosen. It was served with pork bacon, chicken sausage, mushroom, cherry tomato and hash brown.

For me, I ordered the Guacamole Toast, with scrambled egg and sourdough bread. Over here, the guacamole is not evident in the photo as it has been covered with the eggs on top. There were also mushrooms, cherry tomatoes and hash brown on the side. Both of us felt that breakfast was mediocre as we had higher expectations for the food. Due to the stacking up of the eggs and guacamole, my sourdough was hard and soggy. I would have preferred if they toasted the bread separately, while allowing me to spread the guacamole on my own.

As for the other continental selection, we ordered the bakery basket, seasonal local fruits, and cured fish plate (smoked salmon). It was a filling breakfast and we went back up to our room to snooze after that. We have been used to this type of ala carte buffet breakfast style, since Singapore imposed strict restrictions to curb the spread of covid-19 and self-help buffets have been banned at many places.

Check out was at 3pm, and we were shocked to see long queues forming at check in, with only 2-3 counters open. It is definitely inefficient and a stark contrast to our check in process the day before. Being our second time staying at Andaz, we were quite disappointed. Booking a slot to go to the swimming pool was impossible and the staff did not make any concessions for us. I don’t think we would be coming back here anytime soon. Even the minibar selection has shrunk, featuring mainly canned drinks such as Coke and green tea. A few years ago, they even had a bottle of beer in the complimentary mini bar selection. My fondest memory was the Happy Hour for all guests at the dining area, between 5 to 7pm, where free flow of housepours such as beer and wine, together with some snacks were served. Times have changed indeed.
