Wooloomoolo Group, an independent group of celebrated premium steakhouses from Hong Kong, stakes its claim in Singapore by opening its first restaurant inside the Raffles City Shopping Centre.
Taking its name from a bay side town in Sydney, Australia, Wooloomooloo Steakhouse is situated in a stunning locale with impressive views of the city. Comprising 6,300sq ft of wining and dining space, the stylish restaurant promises a memorable dining experience with its premium steak selections, Australian-inspired offerings, as well as an outstanding range of wines and cocktails.
Wooloomooloo Steakhouse has won many awards, including being one of the winning restaurants of the Singapore Restaurant Week in 2022. Their menu is innovative and refreshing, while staying true to its origins of being a steakhouse.
The restaurant backdrop makes for a nice photograph, with these wood carvings. If only there was a fireplace, these pieces of wood would be useful.
This is a special menu specially curated for Amex cardholders, which is very worth it, as it is 1for1, so you only pay $168 for 2 people.
Complimentary bread was served while we were deciding on the menu. It comes with salted butter by the side. The bread had a crispy crust and a short interior, with some sauteed onions that were mixed in the baking process.
1st course: Australian Westholme Wagyu Carpaccio. It was our first time having Carpaccio, which is a thinly sliced piece of meat, usually served raw. As it was very thin, the raw taste of the beef was not very strong. There was shaved parmesan, arugula, drizzled with olive oil, so it is somewhat like a salad.
To pair with our meal, we had a Spanish red and Italian red. Each glass is about $20-21 which is quite steep. Even though the Italian red (Chianti Classico) had higher ratings as stated on the menu, but we both preferred the Spanish one.
2nd course: Cauliflower Veloute. A velouté sauce is a savory sauce that is made from a roux and a light stock. It is one of the “mother sauces” of French cuisine. I liked the soup which comes with a drizzle of curry oil, some garlic croutons and chives. The cream was not too overpowering, and the soup was really smooth. The baby accompanying us also enjoyed the soup so much that he kept asking for more.
3rd course: Jumbo Lump Crab Cake. It had huge chunks of crab meat, which is so unlike the crab cakes that we had at Thai restaurants. It is indeed premium quality crab served here, with some coleslaw and mustard mayonnaise by the side. Even though I do not enjoy tartar sauce, but this serving was just sufficient with the crab cake.
4th course: Australian 150 day grain fed rib eye. There were 4 choices of main course on the menu, so we decided to order 2 to share and try. There were only 3 slices of roasted kipfler potatoes, so if you are a carbs person, you may need to add on more fries or potatoes. The cherry tomatoes were grilled, such that it was bursting with flavour in every bite. The steak was medium done, with a nice chargrill exterior, while the interior remains red. There was black peppercorn sauce by the side and the waiter also went round to ask if I needed mustard.
The other main course is the Lobster Linguini, with chunks of lobster, tossed with dashi butter, parmesan and prawn oil. I liked the oil based linguine, with the lobster pieces that were generous, but I was also accustomed to the arriabiata sauce for the Lobster pasta that I used to have at Burlamacco. This dish looks little, but after finishing the pasta, you would feel about 80% with some space for desserts.
5th course: Yuzu Citrus. I enjoyed this refreshing dessert so much, as it comes with yuzu sorbet, prosecco and cinnamon poached pear, tahitian lime zest. The pears did not have much of a taste even though it was poached in prosecco and cinnamon. It would have been better to pour the prosecco all over it.
The other dessert is the Wooloomooloo Cheesecake. It comes with red berry compote and yoghurt gelato. Instead of a dense cheesecake with a strong cheese aftertaste, this one made of yoghurt was nice and pleasant. We liked the ice cream too.
With five courses done and dusted, we were very satisfied with the meal. Even though I had specially requested to the staff that we were celebrating our anniversary, and they even acknowledged that on Whatsapp, but no special dish or plating was done to commemorate it. I was slightly disappointed, but then again they were attentive to our table and also provided child-friendly cutlery. They gave him a complimentary scoop of vanilla ice cream with some fresh strawberries, and that definitely put a smile on his face. He ate the ice cream to his heart’s content.
We hope to be back again at Wooloomooloo to celebrate other special occasions! Hope that they will change their menu and we can try new creations the next time.
As mentioned, we went back to Wooloomooloo again in 2023, to celebrate our anniversary but this time without Enzo. Anyway, the menu has changed, it has been downsized to a 4-course meal and also there was no more Lobster Linguini, instead it has been replaced with pan-seared chicken linguini, which I feel is a downgrade.
Steak tartare, which goes well with the slice of crispy bread. My wife, who doesn’t really like eating raw food, not even sashimi, did try a little of this steak tartare and passed the rest to me.
Last year, the staff forgot to serve us the complimentary slice of cake, even though I had made a special note to them in the reservation. This year, we had a nice slice of cake, it was salted caramel and also came with nice plating.
Not sure if we would come back again after the reduction in number of courses. The steak is of course still as good, and the soup as well. If you are free during lunch, do check out their weekday set lunch setting from $55++. It is also available with KrisPay so you can earn additional Krisflyer miles on your meal (up to 6 miles per dollar).
