Soi 47 Thai food is a hidden gem, located at Block 47 of Toa Payoh. The menu features finger food items like deep fried spring rolls, fried tofu with Thai sweet chilli sauce and papaya salad, main courses such as phad thai with chicken, fried kway teow with beef and fried pineapple rice. Many of the dishes are handmade and all the seafood used is fresh. The kitchen team is mainly made up of Thai chefs who ensure authenticity.
We went on a weekday evening so the place was not to crowded. They have another outlet at Bugis. For the original store at Toa Payoh, it is about 15 minutes walk from Toa Payoh MRT. Price of each dish is on average $6 which is really affordable. For bigger items such as the steamed fish or fried fish in Thai chilli sauce, it is $19. We ordered the pineapple rice, Tom yum clear seafood soup, stir fried kangkong in sambal, Thai fried prawn cakes, deep fried pork collar with Thai chilli sauce and Thai iced milk tea.
The Tom yum clear seafood soup ($6.80) doesn’t look spicy but it was at the right spice level. The seafood portions were generous. Other places would give two prawns, some squid and add a lot of mushrooms, but here at Soi 47, they even had mussels and two pieces of fried fish.
The pineapple rice ($6) was tasty, with a healthy portion of cashew nuts and prawns. The pineapple cubes, raisins and the pork floss added a sweet taste to the dish. I wished it had been served in a pineapple dish and not just a plate.
The home made breaded prawn cakes (4 pieces for $6) were delicious, I still could bite into the bits of prawn in the fritters. Other places had prawn cakes where everything is mashed and has a more artificial taste. But the prawn cakes here seem to be made fresh from the original ingredients, lightly breaded and fried to a crispy texture.
The deep fried pork collar ($7.50) was also fried, so they turned out to be too brown. The texture of the meat was still juicy and tender though. The pork went well with the Thai chilli sauce.
Lastly, the stir fried kangkong in sambal sauce ($5.50). It is a typical vegetable dish which cannot go wrong. The portion was enough for three people and the spice level was ok for us. The stems were crunchy.
The Thai iced milk tea ($3) tasted dilute. I think they added too much ice and less of the tea powder. It provided a thirst quencher under the hot weather.
Overall, I would still come back to Soi 47 because of the authentic Thai food at affordable prices. I wanted to try the Thai mango sticky rice ($5) for dessert but we were too full after having the main course. Of course the best Thai food would be found in Thailand, do time to book your next flight to Bangkok or any other Thai destination to get your hands on some good local food! If you cannot make it, then Soi 47 Thai food would be your next best option.
With my entertainer app, I had one dish free. It is not so worth it for buy one get one free because most of the dishes are around $6. The cashier also asked me to pay in cash even though the terms for the entertainer app discount was to pay by the respective bank’s credit card.
