Address: 21A Boon Tat St, Singapore 069620

Nearest MRT: Telok Ayer (Downtown line)

Cuisine: Western, craft beers on tap

After our sumptuous meal at Burger Bar New York, we headed over to Freehouse which was in the vicinity. I had wanted to check out this place because it looked cool.

Freehouse is a craft beer joint you can escape to after a hard day’s work. Hidden on the second floor of a shophouse along Boon Tat Street, you will climb up a flight of stairs before reaching beer haven.

The bar has a unique layout with 16 beers on tap which are rotated every week or so, which is why there is a QR code on each table to scan and access the beer menu on your mobile device. This allows them to update their new beer products and also helps to save the environment by using less paper.

Their food menu is not extensive, but they have some classic bar bites which are mostly deep fried food. The tacos seem interesting too. Since we already had a filling dinner, we just came here for drinks instead.

Aptly named at the bar area, there are “no strangers here”. Strangers can easily bond over the beer or chat with the friendly bartenders who are always ready to recommend you some craft beer to suit your tastes. The cheapest beers start from $11.50 for a 10 oz portion. I had a pint of Pulpy Bits ($19) while my friend went for a half pint of 541son, pronounced as saison. It had a citrusy ale taste. We tried the chocolate hazelnut beer but did not like it as the two flavours did not mix well and did not suit our palate. The waitress did a good job of explaining the taste of each beer, and had good recommendations for us. We could also sample a sip of the beer before we decided on which one to order.

We enjoyed the craft beer here at Freehouse. With a constantly rotating menu, we are afraid that we would not be able to try all the beers before it is changed again. The prices are reasonable and the bar is not so crowded on a Friday night, so it is nice. The bar has some simple paintings and a wooden feel, without the need for a live band to play boisterous music, it is actually a nice place to socialise with friends.
