Cuisine: Italian
Address: 28 Ann Siang Rd, #B1-01, Singapore 069708
Nearest MRT: Telok Ayer Station (Downtown line)

Blue Label has two locations, one at Telok Ayer and the other at Mandarin Gallery. The latter is more prominently featured as it is the first one that pops up on Google Maps. It offers a modern take on the neighborhood pizzeria. Diners can enjoy a concise menu of premium salads and snacks along with the acclaimed stone-fired pizza.

For the design of the restaurant, it can be seen that they have placed much care into the design and architecture of the restaurants, together with the menu offerings and service. Despite the small size of the interior, but it is big in spirit and wins customers over with its delicious bites.

We went to Blue Label for a friend’s birthday celebrations. Having come from Chinatown Station, it was a short walk to the restaurant. It was sad to see that most of the shops in Chinatown have shuttered. The familiar souvenir stores that I used to stock up on souvenirs are long gone because very few tourists visit Singapore nowadays. It was a slightly tiring climb up Ann Siang hill but it was worth it, because it makes you work out for your meal afterwards.

Cheers! The house beer on tap which was not really a full pint.

The Wu-tang clam pizza ($38) was a special dish only available at the Ann Siang outlet. It was like eating a vongole pasta, except that the accompaniment is pizza dough instead of pasta. We loved the umami flavours of the juicy clams and the crispy pizza dough.

The other pizza that we ordered for sharing is the Umami Bomb ($31), with shitake mushrooms, spinach, lemon, anchovy, goat cheese and cornmeal crust. Even though this is a vegetarian pizza, but the flavours of the ingredients were infused so wonderfully. Not everyone is a fan of goat’s cheese, so you may want to skip this pizza as the cheese has a strong smell. For us, we were fine with it.

To complete our meal, we ordered the soft serve ice cream in a cup ($8), topped with cornflakes. The ice cream flavours for the swirl were vanilla and oat’s milk, but due to the similar colours, there was not much of a contrast. The soft serve was a disappointment. They put a candle in the ice cream for our friend who was celebrating his birthday.

Overall, we would come back to Blue Label for their delicious. I wonder what special ingredient they put inside their pizza such that it is super crisp. At other Italian pizzarias with wood-fired ovens, the pizza would become soggy after a while that it has been taken out of the oven. But over here, the pizza dough was very much crisp throughout our meal. The service staff were also attentive to details, for example seeing that our table was full, they put a small wooden block on the table so that the two pizzas could be stacked and this helped to save space.
