Thinking back about Lyon, I think it is a really liveable and lovable city. The transportation system is efficient, with tram, metro, bus, funicular. There are many sights and activities to do in Lyon, because it is a much larger city than Grenoble. Lyon is situated at the confluence of two mighty rivers – the Rhone and the Saone, so there are many water activities and beautiful housing or buildings located along the rivers.
In Vieux Lyon, there is a traboules maze where one can just easily get lost in it. It was really fun discovering the hidden and secret passageways, entering through a door and appearing on another street next.
Furthermore, Lyon is also known as the gastronomic capital of France, there are so many different types of food to sample here. Restaurants begin setting tables around 11am and lunch is a big affair here, it can stretch for up to 2 hours. I dined at a bouchon with my couchsurfing host and we had a set menu which consisted of an entree, a main course and dessert. As we’re in France, of course we had a bottle of rosé wine to pair with the meal as well. It was really authentic and delicious, I ate to my heart’s content.
However, the weather was too hot, the sun was good but walking along the streets was unbearably scorching. Other than that, I think Lyon is really a nice city, the people do not have the arrogance of the Parisians, it is more manageable to tackle on a smaller scale and I feel safer in this city. I could walk alone on the streets around 11pm because I missed the last bus, and I did not have any weird encounter.
