The idea for Dan’s Steaks came about during Phase 1 of Singapore’s Circuit Breaker period. Back then when everyone was at home, Dan prepared steaks to be delivered to his friends and family. It was meant to be a friends-and-family only affair but word started spreading on how delicious these steaks were, so Dan decided to set up his own chain of steak restaurants.
The new outlet at East Coast only opened one year ago, in Nov 2021. It is located at a quiet corner of Siglap, surrounded by other restaurants selling Thai and Indian cuisine. The restaurant was about 70% full when we visited on a Sunday evening. We had originally reserved for a table of 5 and outdoor seating, however the person on the phone did not note down my request and the outdoor tables were full. In the end, one of the members of my party did not want to join the dinner and so the 4 of us had indoor seats instead. It was unfortunate that there was a miscommunication with the staff, but the waiter on that day was apologetic and tried to make us feel comfortable inside the restaurant, such as switching off one of the ACs when we found it too cold.
For appetisers, we ordered some pan-seared Hokkaido scallops ($27), just nice there were 4 pieces to share among the four of us. The scallops were cooked in garlic butter and lemon, served on a sizzling plate and with toast. The scallops were so plump and juicy. We savoured every bite of it, and also used the toast to soak up the goodness of the sauce.
The main courses took a while to be prepared. The NZ fillet mignon (260-280g $42) that I had was cooked medium doneness, and had its juices nicely sealed in. All mains come with one side of your choice, so I chose pan-roasted mushrooms (would have been $14 ala carte). We had another fillet mignon with Dan’s mac and cheese for the sides. My mum ordered the bone-in pork rib chop (350g $28) with pan-roasted asparagus. The meat was cooked sous-vide, seared with butter and herbs, so the meat was still tender.
Since I had made known that we were celebrating a birthday (my brother’s) when I had made the reservation, I was surprised that the staff remembered. They sent out Dan’s Amazing Brownie ($12) which was served with vanilla bean ice cream on the side. This dessert was complimentary and my brother enjoyed scooping up the remnants of the brownie.
Other than the minor hiccup, I think that the service at the Siglap outlet was excellent. The food was great and we hope to come back again. Even though the restaurant is called Dan’s Steaks and you do not eat beef for some reason, you still can come here to sample the salmon, pork or chicken. There are other options worth trying on the menu, but of course steak is the main highlight – angus ribeye, sirloin or fillet mignon.
