For those staying in the east and want to try some decent Chinese food, do head over to Mahota Kitchen. The restaurant has a farm-to-table concept, where everything is made from scratch with fresh, quality produce from their very own organic farm in Shanghai. Even their fish is farmed locally, so it makes sense to support the local fish farms, making it more sustainable in future.

There was a Chinese New Year set menu when we visited, but there were too many dishes and the total price was quite steep, so we decided to order ala carte dishes instead.

This is the stir fried cordyceps flower ($10.80) which was tasty and looks colourful with the green, white and orange mix. It was too oily though.

The kampong chicken with crispy butter garlic ($13.80) was crisp on the outside and juicy on the inside. Even though a few cloves of garlic were used, the dish did not have a strong garlic taste, which is good for me as I do not like a lot of it in my food.

The Chef Special prawn roll ($8.80) had bits of prawn in the roll which was lightly fried. There was a sauce by the side for dipping, if you find that the prawn roll does not have enough taste.

The bamboo charcoal beancurd ($10.80) was under the vegetables section too, making it suitable for vegetarians. This is not the first time that I have tried charcoal beancurd, so the colour does not put me off. I guess the black beancurd has a softer texture than the normal one, and the mini mushrooms add an extra taste to the dish.

Lastly, the most awaited dish is the Curry assam fish head ($28.80) which came with thick coconut and assam gravy. It was delicious and reminded me fo the days when we used to hop across the border to eat Curry fish head at Kam Long in Johor. There were a lot of ingredients in the curry to soak up its goodness, such as long bean, brinjal, lady’s finger, cabbage and of course, fish.

Reared sustainably with much love and care at the sea
waters off Pulau Tekong, the fish thrive in the natural sea waters
and are fed quality feed free from hormones to promote healthy
growth.

Overall, despite the set menu not being available here as it was recently Chinese New Year and they have not updated it, we still enjoyed our overall meal here. The set menu is designed just for those with big family groups or just for 2 pax, so you would want to consider the shop’s layout before choosing to dine here.
