Refuel is a cafe, eatery and coffee roastery located on a busy corner site in Bedok Reservoir Road. With glazed frontage on two sides of the building, it is a laidback cafe in the neighbourhood of Bedok Reservoir, perfect for an afternoon tea or Sunday brunch.

I have been here three times with my colleagues and each time it did not disappoint. After a tiring day at work, all we want to do is unwind and to refuel. While canteen food is cheap and good, it could get boring after a while eating the same kind of food.

Refuel has a nice interior design and a no-frills design where you order at the counter. There is no GST and service charge in the menu, so you pay the price that you see on the menu. The food is affordable, with mains starting from $12.90 and sandwiches from $9.90. Their desserts are also delicious without being over the top, which is a good way to end off a meal. Even on weekday afternoons, the cafe is abuzz with a stream of regular customers.

For the iced drinks (mostly $5.90), the ice mocha latte and ice hazelnut latte were good, with a strong hint of coffee and not being overly sweet. The ice chocolate was just normal, it tasted like iced milo and not worth the $5.90 pricetag.

In terms of main courses, there is a wide variety, although I have yet to try the mains because they are only available after 4pm. We usually order the brunch items or pasta which are available all day long.

The mushroom awesomeness ($10.90) is really awesome as its name suggests. It is perfect for vegetarians. It is a chokeful of sauteed mushrooms served over two sunny side ups and toast. The toast is great for soaking up the oozing egg yolk and the sauteed mushrooms act as a dressing for the arugula leaves.

The salmon scramble ($12.50) is also worth trying, for those who enjoy eating smoked salmon. It was not too salty and goes well with the scrambled eggs and avocado on toast. However, the bread was quite hard when it was served. The avocado was not creamy enough, I guess it was probably due to the fact that Singapore has to import its avocados. I have eaten creamier avocados from Mexico.

Fuel me up ($10.90) is a unique concoction of baked eggs with meatballs with crispy bacon, mushrooms, pepeprs, swiss chesse and tomatoes served in a casserole. Bread was served by the side which is good for soaking up the delectable sauce again. The dish is rich and flavourful.

The pulled pork burger ($12.90) is a must-try for pork-lovers. The meat is marinated in a delicious sweet and sour sauce and they had heaps of the pulled pork in the burger, accompanied by salad on the side. They use wholegrain bread for the buns which I like as it is a healthier option.

For desserts, I have only tried the pancake banana ($9.50) which comes with three big pancakes that can actually be like a main course. I was quite full after that and luckily the pancakes are quite fluffy and had a generous helping of syrup to go with it. Surprisingly, they also have savoury waffles – sausage/ bacon/ smoked salmon on freshly baked waffles on the menu. I hope to try it the next time we visit Refuel.

Refuel is a refreshing gem in a local neighbourhood without too much over-the-top glamour. The prices are good and the dishes are of a certain standard, enough to satisfy your taste buds. After dining at Refuel, you can take a leisurely stroll along Bedok Reservoir park to burn off those calories. For those who love drinks, Refuel also has a wide selection of alcoholic drinks.
