Wheeler’s Yard has coffee & traditional pub offerings served in a retro, bicycle-themed warehouse-turned-cafe.
Since we visited on a weekday, there was a weekday lunch special, where you can top up $5 to complete your meal with a salad and drink with the main course. The salad was pretty basic, with the Japanese sesame dressing.
Three of us ordered a Hot Latte, which came with a nice latte art and traditional biscuits by the side.
For mains, we had Chilli Crab Pasta ($18.90). I liked the chilli crab sauce with a tinge of spice and sweetness. There was soft shell crab and some curry leaves scattered in the pasta. I believe that the sauce really made the pasta dish taste good. The soft shell crab was lightly fried and was not too oily.
The Crab Mayo Croissant ($16.90) is under the brunch items. It has ebikko, cucumber, tomatoes and mixed salad on the side. While the crab mayo was tasty, but for those who prefer hot dishes, this might not be so ideal.
The Miso Pork Belly Bowl ($17.90) comes with homemade pickled cabbage, onsen egg, sesame seeds, cabbage and pork. While the presentation looks good, but the miso pork was lacking in taste as the miso flavour was not strong enough. The pieces of pork belly were slightly charred which gave it a slight burnt flavour which was nice, but the pork slices did not have much taste.
For those feeling more luxurious, you can order the Wagyu Beef Rice Bowl ($50) which serves premium wagyu beef. They use A4 Wagyu beef from Japan and the meat quality is comparable to Fat Cow. There is also an option to add on $10 for a slice of foie gras. Wow it seems like Wheeler’s Yard has outdone itself to market as a premium cafe, but if you do not want to burn a hole in your pocket, there are other more affordable options for main courses.
Lastly, the Signature BBQ Pork Ribs ($23.90) is a half rack of baby back ribs that has been cooked sous vide for 48 hours. It comes with homemade BBQ sauce, mixed salad with pineapple, green apple, baby potatoes and capsicum. We liked how the meat fell of the bone easily as it was very tender, and the BBQ sauce complimented the meat very well.
Housed within a massive industrial warehouse, the luxury of space here allows everyone to break away from feeling claustrophobic and slow down their pace while soaking up the atmosphere. The various bike items on display matches the atmosphere of the cafe. There are other souvenirs such as Tshirts on sale, which you can take home with you if you are really into the Wheeler’s Yard brand.
In terms of the food, there might be hits and misses so be sure to opt for their Chef’s Recommendations. We would come back here again if we pass by the area or to have a cuppa coffee. The location is a bit out of the way, but if you don’t mind exploring the Balestier area and dropping by Wheeler’s Yard, this would be an ideal weekend brunch destination. Of course, do remember to make a reservation to avoid disappointment.
