Situated in the historic Dempsey Hills area of Singapore, the REDDOT Brewhouse occupies a restored 1860’s military barracks building, set amid lush tropical foliage. The expansive space provides both for indoor dining and bar, and outdoor tables on two levels of garden terraces. Accessed from the street level carpark via steps set up into the hill- the entrance lobby provides an open view through full height glass walls of the working micro brewery. The main building itself is open on all sides to the outdoor garden areas, but provides welcome relief from the tropical sunshine during daylight hours.
Being invited to a wedding, I had a chance to visit this outlet at Dempsey Hill, which is quite unique and feels out of the city in our small island state. I had visited other outlets such as the one at Boat Quay.
The starter was mushroom soup, a simple dish that was quite diluted. It was not rich, but still acceptable.
As most of the guests were famished, we quickly polished this Chicken satay dish. What I like about it is that the satay does not have the fatty parts, it is made of small chunks of chicken and served with peanuts by the side.
Next it was the start of the entrees, which is the pork knuckle with mashed potatoes and sauerkraut. The pork knuckle did not come with crispy skin so it was disappointing. It felt like the gravy was poured over the whole dish and topped with corriander, which is quite Chinese style I would have preferred the pork knuckle to be dry and served with sauce like mustard by the side. The vermicelli by the side also feels odd.
Next is the Sauteed mixed vegetables with mushrooms. It is a simple dish, that comes with broccoli, cauliflower, carrots and some mushrooms.
This is the beer-brined roasted spring chicken. Perhaps the beer used was quite sparse or that it had evaporated during the cooking process, so we could not really taste the beer in this dish. The chicken meat was not dry but lacked in taste.
I missed out on a photo of the baked salmon fillet in beurre blanc sauce, which was the next dish served. It was nice because salmon was my favourite fish but the fish was overcooked. The sauce could have been used more sparingly.
The last entree is the Okonomiyaki (seafood) pizza. It had a mix of Italian and Japanese taste with the bonito flakes. The pizza was quite some time ago before it was served, so it wasn’t as crispy as it was supposed to be.
The last one was the dessert – banana strudel. Most people were already preparing to leave as it was getting late and the next day is a working day. The strudel was not so flaky, as the restaurant used the frozen pastry dough, but the good thing is that the dessert is not too sweet.
I think more people enjoyed the beers throughout the night. Amongst the most popular beers at RedDot are the “Summer Ale”, “Czech Pilsner”, “Weizen” (wheat beer), and “English Ale“. A novelty beer is the “Monster Green Lager” – a green coloured pilsner. There was also house wine served, but only a couple of people were taking the wine. It was not the best wine to drink, but simple housepours.
Candid shot. It was a casual wedding dinner, held in an outdoor open space. While some were lamenting about the short hours, 6 to 10.30pm, but I think the duration was just nice and that the restaurant would require its staff to clear up the premises after most of the guests have left. I could see that the staff were quite busy serving all the tables during the wedding, while trying to clear plates and top up the drinks. They did their best to ensure that everyone was well-fed.
