Award-winning tendon shop from Tokyo opens at Plaza Singapura, Vivocity, and now even at Changi City Point. The shop originated from Asakusa in Tokyo, Japan with over 128 years of history. Established by Chef Tanihara Akimitsu, Akimitsu Shitamachi Tendon or Akimitsu is a reowned tempura donburi / tendon / tempura rice bowl restaurant. Their signature family recipe for tempura which stretches back over 130 years to the Edo era of the Samurai (since 1889).

This is going to be a short review because all of us ordered the same thing.

As part of the Akimitsu’s Signature Tendon set meal ($14.90), there was miso soup and chawanmushi served on the side.

There is a heaped helping of ingredients, where the ratio of sticky fluffy white rice is overwhelmed by the generosity of tempura. While most people reviewed that the tempura pieces were too oily and this made the rice greasy, I begged to differ. I felt that the tempura was fried to perfection and drizzled with dark sauce. Even with the spicy sauce, the tempura was still very captivating with each bite. It was not that spicy. We got to sample pieces of tempura such as seaweed, mushroom, long beans, prawn, white fish, brinjal etc. There was a crisp in every bite. You can choose between original sauce or spicy sauce for all the tendon sets.

Overall, I did not understand the hype about this place when it first opened about 4 years ago, so I am thankful that I need not queue for long in order to try this dish. Would I come back here again? Maybe if I have run out of food options, but if not I am sure there are many other food outlets at Changi City Point that you can try.
