Ultimate 3-Day Andaman Islands Itinerary: Beaches, History & Adventure

The Andaman Islands, with their crystal-clear waters, pristine beaches, and rich history, are a dream destination. Whether you’re an adventure seeker or a leisure traveler, this 3-day itinerary covers the best of the islands, ensuring an unforgettable trip.

The Andaman Islands have been home to indigenous tribes for thousands of years. The Great Andamanese, Onge, Jarwa, and Sentinelese are among the original inhabitants, living in isolation for centuries. The Sentinelese, in particular, remain one of the world’s most uncontacted tribes, fiercely protecting their way of life.

In 1789, the British first attempted to establish a colony on the islands, but it was abandoned due to harsh conditions. The infamous Cellular Jail, also called “Kala Pani” (Black Water), was built in the late 19th century, becoming a symbol of oppression where Indian revolutionaries were exiled and subjected to brutal torture.

Day 1: Exploring Port Blair – History & Sunset Views

Morning: Arrival & Cellular Jail Visit

Start your journey in Port Blair, the capital of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. After checking into your hotel, begin with a visit to the Cellular Jail, a colonial-era prison that tells the story of India’s freedom struggle. Take a guided tour to understand the island’s historical significance.

Afternoon: Ross Island Excursion

Catch a short ferry ride to Ross Island, once the British administrative headquarters. Today, it stands as a hauntingly beautiful ruin, overtaken by roots and greenery. Explore the old structures, spot deer roaming freely, and soak in the history.

Established in 1858, Ross Island served as the administrative headquarters for the British in the Andamans. The British developed the island into a self-sufficient township, complete with bungalows, ballrooms, a bazaar, and even a Presbyterian church. This development aimed to create a semblance of British life amidst the remote setting. Today, Ross Island stands as a testament to its colonial past, with ruins of the former British establishments overtaken by dense vegetation. The remnants, including the Chief Commissioner’s residence and the Presbyterian church, offer a poignant glimpse into the island’s storied history. The island is also home to spotted deer and peacocks, adding to its unique charm.

Evening: Corbyn’s Cove Beach & Light and Sound Show

Wind down your first day at Corbyn’s Cove Beach, a tranquil spot ideal for a sunset stroll or jet skiing. Later, return to Cellular Jail for the Light and Sound Show, which narrates the hardships of Indian freedom fighters in a dramatic audio-visual format.

Day 2: Havelock Island – Beaches & Snorkeling

Morning: Radhanagar Beach – Asia’s Best Beach

Passenger ferry to Havelock Island, there are a few companies running the route. Do book in advance online or at one of the travel agencies in town.
The new name for Havelock Island

Take an early morning ferry to Havelock Island. Your first stop: Radhanagar Beach, one of Asia’s most stunning beaches. Walk along its powdery white sand, take a refreshing swim, and admire the turquoise waters.

Afternoon: Snorkeling at Elephant Beach

For adventure lovers, Elephant Beach is a must-visit. Take a short trek or boat ride to reach the beach, where you can snorkel or scuba dive to explore the vibrant coral reefs and marine life. We did a short hike through the forest to reach Elephant Beach. However, it was very crowded with locals doing various water sports, such as jet ski, banana boat, boat tours etc. I would recommend walking further down along Elephant Beach to a less crowded area. You can snorkel, but there was nothing much exciting to see.

For divers, you might also want to dedicate an extra day to dive. Or you can schedule a half-day dive in the Andamans, supposedly the best place to dive in India. The Andamans feature beautiful sloping reefs, steep walls, sandy bottoms, coral gardens, and pinnacles. Visibility is generally good, often extending up to 40 meters (130 feet).

Whether you’re a beginner or an experienced diver, the Andamans offer a range of courses for beginners to advanced divers. To be honest, I wouldn’t say that the diving here is the best, as compared to the Maldives or Philippines, but based on what the locals say, it seems like it is the least polluted waters around India and they claim it to be the best in the country. We thought we could see dugongs and turtles, but we were disappointed as the current was quite strong when we went down.

Evening: Beachside Dinner & Relaxation

As the sun sets, unwind at a beachfront café like Full Moon Café or Anju Coco, enjoying fresh seafood and island vibes. I would also recommend having fresh seafood such as crabs and lobsters, at one of the local seafood stalls. The prices are reasonable.

Do check out the fresh and affordable seafood when you are here!
Check out one of the local markets on Havelock Island for some fresh produce

Day 3: Neil Island – Natural Wonders & Serenity

Morning: Natural Bridge & Bharatpur Beach

Catch an early ferry to Neil Island, known for its laid-back charm. Visit the Natural Bridge, a stunning rock formation sculpted by waves over centuries. The Natural Bridge’s formation is a result of continuous erosion processes: wave action – Persistent waves have gradually eroded the base of coral formations, carving out an arch-like structure. And tidal influence – The ebb and flow of tides have further sculpted the coral, enhancing the bridge’s distinct shape. This combination of factors has led to the creation of the bridge, connecting two small hills and standing as a testament to nature’s artistry.

Then, head to Bharatpur Beach for snorkeling, jet skiing, or simply lounging by the sea.

Afternoon: Laxmanpur Beach & Farewell to Andaman

Wrap up your trip with a visit to Laxmanpur Beach, famous for its stunning sunset views and shallow waters. Later, return to Port Blair for some last-minute shopping at Aberdeen Bazaar before heading to the airport.

Goodbye Andamans! It was a good break.

  • What to Pack: Swimwear, sunscreen, waterproof bags, and comfortable footwear.
