Sen of Japan is a modern Japanese restaurant and bar
serving traditional Japanese cuisine with a contemporary touch.
Crafted with the concept of freshness or “Sen” in mind, the menu features well-flavoured creations made using a medley of fine Japanese ingredients put together by former head chef at the highly acclaimed NOBU Las Vegas, Nakano Hiromi.
The weekday lunch menu consists of sushi and rice bowls, served with appetiser, tempura, salad, miso soup and dessert. I think it is quite worth it, especially if you’re around the Marina Bay area. For us, we decided to make use of the Amex dining privileges, which is 50% off the items on the ala carte main menu, and each person needs to order at least one main course.
Under the Sushi Moriawase ($58), there were 6 pieces of sushi, with a small ball of rice and a thick slice of sashimi on the top. The fish used is definitely of premium grade, and I heard that the restaurant even has airflown sashimi from the famous Tsukiji fish market in Tokyo.
For mains, this is the Ikayaki ($28) or grilled squid. You can choose between a salt or soy sauce for the glaze. The squid was grilled to perfection, with some parts charred and the soy sauce was used sparingly but gave enough taste to the squid.
The other main course that we ordered to share is the Black Cod Soy ($36). The cod fillet was coated in Hiro’s special soy marinade, that made the fish very easy to savour. The sauce was delicious, with some parts salty and some parts sour, with a hint of yuzu. The fish was very fresh as well and after grilling, the skin was slightly crispy without having a strong fishy taste. We finished the small piece of fish quickly. On hindsight, we should have ordered some rice to go with the meal as the sushi rice was not filling enough.
I recommend going for the Lunch set if you’re visiting on weekdays. The Amex offer is better used on weekends or for dinner, when the set lunch is not available. I saw many office workers having the lunch set, such as rice bowl. Overall, we loved the quality of food at Sen of Japan and the service staff were also attentive.
