This place is the sixth outlet situated in Tanjong Pagar, under the Keisuke group of restaurants. This is the first of its kind in Singapore, (unless you count Pepper Lunch as a similar concept) casting spotlight on one of Nippon’s most well-loved national dishes : “hamburg” steak (pronounced hahn-bha-gu).
Highlight of the dish is definitely the prime US beef patties served sizzling on hotplates where customers will be spoiled with two choices : Keisuke Prime Beef Hamburg Set or Triple Cheese Prime Beef Hamburg Set. Each set is accompanied with free flow of eggs and a variety of 20 items spread of osozai (Japanese side dishes), which is a common feature among the Keisuke restaurants.
Joining the neighbouring 5 outlets in Tanjong Pagar which include Ramen Keisuke Tonkotsu King, Ramen Keisuke Tori King, Keisuke Gyoza King, Takeda Shoten (Sake Bar) and Ginza Tendon Itsuki, the owner of Keisuke is trying to introduce Japanese soul food in the precinct!
After taking our orders, the waiter invited us to the salad bar where we could pick and choose various side dishes on display. Due to covid times, we could not handle the food on our own, so we had to pick and choose the dishes we wanted while the waiter scooped the food onto a plate for us.
There is a variety of side dishes, from salad to eggs to pasta. You can choose between tamago, omelette or fried egg for your choice of eggs. Unlike the ramen outlet which only serves hard boiled eggs, this Hamburg Keisuke has more options for your eggs.
My wife ordered the Harami Steak ($29.90) which comes with vegetables, a choice of sauce, miso soup and steamed rice. The steak was not done as perfectly as she envisioned, but the ponzu sauce with a mix of tanginess and salty added some flavour to the meat.
For me, I had the signature dish – Keisuke Prime Beef Hamburg Steak Set ($20.90) this comes with a slice of beef patty, deep fried tofu, fried prawn, tofu with spring onion and a choice of sauce. I had the Keisuke original sauce. The beef patty was juicy even though it was grilled on the hot plate. Upon slicing it, some of the juices oozed out. Even though it was a patty, there were no bits of fats unlike in some other places serving it. I enjoyed the additional side dishes like the fried prawn and tofu. It was delicious and to my liking.
Overall, it was quite quiet when we visited during lunch time, perhaps due to the fact that most people were still working from home. When Hamburg Keisuke first opened, it attracted huge crowds and there were long lines outside the restaurant every night. But now the crowd has died down and it is a good time to visit. If you are not feeling full after the main course, you can always go back to the free flow salad bar to get other small bites, or to stock up on pasta or potatoes which will definitely fill you up.
