Nearest MRT: Newton MRT (Downtown / North-South line)

It was the last day of dining out before the country entered the Phase 2 (Heightened Alert) where no dining out would be allowed for the subsequent 4-5 weeks. I quickly called Sheraton Hotel to make a booking for afternoon high tea since my booking for Komo (the next week) was cancelled.

The hotel cafe was not very crowded on the Friday afternoon that we visited.

There were some couples and groups of friends hanging out, some ordered the high tea set while the rest just ordered a drink only.

We could choose from a wide array of drinks, fro various flavours of coffees and teas. The welcome drink served to us upon arrival is a Minty Calamansi with Sour Plum.

I also ordered a Mackwoods Peppermint tea for the second drink.

This was the full afternoon set for two. There were two sets of each item, stacked on a 3-tier plate. It looks little but after finishing everything, it was quite filling.

Let’s start off with the uppermost tier. It consists of Milo Dinosaur Gateauz and Orh Nee Swiss Roll. I am not a fan of yam paste, so I did not like the Orh Nee swiss roll. The Milo Dinosaur gateauz was rich and full of milo chocolatey taste.

The middle tier is the Butterfly Pea Financier, Gula Melaka Kaya Cake and Teh Talik Cheese Cake Dome. We enjoyed the infusion of local flavours such as teh tarik (pulled milk tea) and kaya (coconut jam) which added a distinct taste to the desserts. The Financier had a beautiful piece of blue pea flavour for decoration on the top.

As for the last layer, there was Old Style sardine sandwich, Smoked Salmon Laksa Mayo kueh pie tee, Satay Chicken Wrap and Egg Mayo with spicy shrimp tart. Again, there were many local flavours included, from the spicy shrimp paste of hae bee hiam to curry leaf used in the seasoning of the dishes. The kueh pie tee was still crispy as I bit into the shell containing the smoked salmon and laksa mayo.

This is the highlight of my afternoon tea set. It was the Mini lobster roll, while this is a mini version, it is definitely tastier than Luke’s lobster rolls. The lobster meat was coated with mayo sauce and the buttered and lightly toasted bun was delicious with every bite. I could definitely eat ten of these lobster rolls at one go!

With any high tea set, scone are definitely a staple of it. We had two different types of scones to try, one Pandan coconut and the other Madagascar vanilla. Both scones were buttery, flaky and not too dry. I have eaten not-so-nice scones and they were really hard to swallow, but these over at Sheraton’s are one of the best. Served with clotted cream and homemade rosella jam on the side, it is one bite not to be missed. The jam was not cloyingly sweet and the clotted cream complemented the scones. There was also a Baked meatless sausage roll for each, it was nothing to rave about because the roll did not taste appetising. This is suitable for vegetarians or for those looking for a meatless option.

Lastly, there were pieces of premium chocolate pralines. It is very common to pop a praline in your mouth after dinner when you are in Europe. For these pralines they seem to be handmade and letting it slowly melt in your mouth was the best way to savour these delectable chocolates.

Sheraton is just a stone’s throw away from the main shopping belt along Orchard Road. It is near Newton MRT and easily accessible. Their high tea sets are affordable and contain a wide variety of items. If you are looking to spend an enjoyable afternoon without eating too much food, then this is the place to be.

High tea set for one: $42++
High tea set for two: $80++

Thanks to my HSBC card and birthday offer, I managed to pay half the price for the two of us. It was a wonderful dining experience before we could not dine out in a long while. The afternoon high tea is available from 2pm to 5pm daily.
