Tucked into a small corner of Waterloo centre, this nondescript cafe had a small queue forming around 6.30pm on a Friday evening. Having not made any reservations, we were told that it was full, but luckily after waiting 10 minutes, they forfeited one of the reserved tables to let us in.

As recommended by our friend who has been here a few times, we ordered the truffle fries (L, $13), duck confit ($21) and Furikake prawn chorizo ($20). The truffle fries arrived soon after we ordered as it was probably pre-prepared. The smell of truffle was strong and since we were all hungry, we devoured the entire bowl of fries within minutes.

The duck confit is my favourite French dish, so I always give it a try when I visit a cafe or restaurant to see if they can prepare up to my standards. My mum has also mastered the art of cooking duck confit at home to my liking, so I tend to be quite critical when trying it. At BetterField, the duck confit did not disappoint me, although I wished that the duck leg could have been larger. It was served on a platter of spinach leaves and sauteed mushrooms which paired well with the duck. The marinade used for the duck was not too salty and the berry sauce on the side added a zingy taste to the dish.

For my friend who had the Furikake prawn chorizo, the prawns seemed a little tiny to be labeled “tiger prawns”. The sauce was served in appropriate portions and the pasta was cooked to perfection such that it still maintained the springy texture. The prawns and tiny strips of sausage (chorizo) accompanied the pasta till the plate was wiped clean.

For steak lovers, their steak prices are affordable too. Their black angus ribeye is priced at $21 (200g), $38 (400g) and $50 (600g) depending on how much beef you would like to consume in one setting. I think it is quite a steal indeed!

Overall, the food prices are quite reasonable, and even better news is that there is not GST nor service charge. Everything on the menu is nett price. We did not have time to try the desserts, but they looked pretty appealing as well.
